WELCOME FROM MARK MCGOUGH

Mark McGough, Head of School

Welcome to Harbor School. I invite you to explore our website and familiarize yourself with Vashon’s only K-8 independent school.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

There is a movement to our school. You will see students working individually, in pairs and in small groups. You will see multi-age classrooms in which self-directed learners engage in a variety of learning, presenting you with a vibrant blur of activity. You will see students sitting still, reflecting, analyzing, enjoying the silence of inner thought. You will see students clambering on the play structure, racing around the sports field, heading out on travel study, and moving to the beat of an individual and communal drum. You will both see and feel this movement when you visit our campuses.

WHAT YOU WILL HEAR

There is a hum to our school. Our students, from kindergarten through grade 8, are learners who engage actively with each other and with their teachers. They ask questions, they challenge answers, they communicate in both English and Spanish, they present their learning to peers and family in diverse ways, they reflect, they contribute, they laugh, and they create an energy that fills the campuses with a genuine love of learning. You will both hear and feel this energy when you visit our campuses.

WHAT YOU WILL FEEL

If like me, you see and hear that energy, then I think you will also feel what I feel too. You will feel the passion and the commitment that our students bring to their learning on a daily basis. You will feel inspired by the sense of community and the love of learning that a Harbor School education nurtures in everyone.

If like me, you see and hear and feel that energy, then I urge you to take a moment to come and visit us. We would love to say hello and welcome you to Harbor School, Vashon’s only k-8 independent school.
