Message From The Incoming Head - Teri Rutledge

Dear Harbor School Community,

I am truly delighted to be writing you this letter as the soon to be Head of the Harbor School. It is both humbling and exciting to join this wonderful community and I can’t wait to begin this important work. I want to thank the Search Committee for leading an incredibly thoughtful process that afforded me the opportunity to meet so many members of the community and gain insight into the engaging, personalized academic experience the Harbor School provides. I am especially grateful to the parents and faculty who gave so much time and energy to the search. This demonstration of care and commitment to the mission of the school is a large part of what made me excited to accept this offer.

During my visit to the Harbor School I observed a thoughtful, supportive and joyful school program. From the youngest students at Carpe Diem enthusiastically challenging themselves in a series of math games, to Harbor School students pushing out of their comfort zones to move, speak, and engage in an active language exercise in Spanish class; I observed a community of students that are bright, curious and comfortable taking risks. The teachers are warm, knowledgeable and competent and impressed me with their wisdom and preparation.

I am excited to bring my energy, expertise and vision to support this community of exceptional students and teachers. My education and background in both formal and experiential education including outdoor and travel learning have prepared me well for this job and I am thrilled to be joining a community whose values and philosophy closely align with my own.

Over the coming months, I will be on campus as much as possible and will participate in community events like the upcoming auction. I look forward to building strong relationships with faculty, parents and students and also learning everything I need to know to ensure a smooth transition. Please, introduce yourself to me (repeatedly!) as we run into each other on campus and around town!

I look forward to working together to provide our students with an education that will allow them to succeed in the classroom, the community and the world.

I am genuinely honored by this opportunity and look forward to getting to know you more soon.
